As amazing as the first day of Istanbul proved to be, I could not neglect the opportunity to take advantage of all there was to experience. Without a tour guide this day, Aunt Cindy and I ventured by ourselves to the basilica cisterns, an underground well, which was an attempt to bring water into the city during the Byzantine Period. It was incredible to walk under the roof that was supported by 336 columns and also visit the head of Medusa within the cistern. The head of Medusa was believed to turn the careless gazer into stone if directly looked at in the eye and to protect the city from evil, which is why the positioning is upside down or sideways.
I guess it’s a good thing I wasn’t turned into stone so I can share about it.
