unexpected getaway

A good friend organized a get together with our college friends for this past Friday - Saturday. For the past two weeks I was indecisive about the invitation due to the timing right before a big trip (which I leave on tomorrow – don’t worry, you will learn more about it later) and due to the three-hour drive – to Indiana.  After thinking through my decision of whether to attend, I figured that I didn’t know how many opportunities we will have to all get together and that it was worth the effort. Let me tell you, it was worth it.
Pulling into the gravel driveway leading up to the house on street 2B (I didn’t ask how many streets the town has), I uttered the words “this feels like the movie The Holiday, just Indiana style.” It was a log home surrounded by beautiful woods without a neighboring house in view.
The overnight began with quality conversation in the cozy family room, hamburgers from the grill once everyone arrived, and a suspenseful hike on the property in the pitch dark in which some of the guys escaped from the group in attempts to come back and scare the girls - how typical.
The hike was fun and out of the ordinary for a suburbia girl but the significance beyond the fun and giggles is the beauty in the simplicity of it all. Spending time outside and relying on just the moonlight forced us to look only at what was right in front of us as we needed to be careful of where we stepped.  Yes, we had flashlights, which we used initially, but it was cool to realize at the end that we didn’t need them.  It made me think back to native times when the technology we have today wasn’t available.
To continue the outdoor theme, the following morning I announced that I had never shot a gun when it came up in conversation. Well, can you guess what came next? Our host taught us how to shoot with a shotgun and riffles. It was exhilarating. I felt adventurous ;).
All of us before the hike

It was a 24-hours well spent :).
